Privacy practices for First Chair Conditions.
First Chair Conditions helps skiers and riders plan mountain days with weather, avalanche context, resort information, maps, and optional alerts. This policy explains what data is processed, why it is used, how long it is kept, and how to contact us.
Effective date: July 19, 2026Who operates the app
First Chair Conditions is operated by Wolfgang Teves, Einzelunternehmer, Elisabethstrasse 27, 80796 München, Deutschland. Wolfgang Teves is the controller for personal data processed by First Chair where no third-party provider acts as an independent controller. For privacy questions, data requests, or deletion questions, contact support@getfirstchair.app. No data protection officer has been appointed because one is not currently required for this project.
For general legal provider information, see the Imprint / Legal Notice.
Data we process
- Account information: If you choose to sign in with Apple, Firebase Authentication processes a user identifier and, depending on what Apple provides and what you share, your name or email address.
- Favorites, settings, and sync data: The app may store favorite resorts, selected settings, map preferences, resort identifiers, resort coordinates, and related app state through Firebase Firestore and/or the user's private iCloud database.
- Push notification data: If you enable powder alerts, avalanche update alerts, or arrival notifications, Firebase Cloud Messaging and Apple Push Notification service may process device tokens, notification permissions, topic subscriptions, alert preferences, selected weekdays, snowfall thresholds, and favorite resort information needed to send those alerts.
- Location and route-related data: Location is used to orient the map, show nearby resorts, assess terrain near your position, provide mountain weather and avalanche context, support optional run tracking/protect features, monitor favorite-resort arrival regions, and send nearby information to Apple Watch. First Chair does not intentionally store your precise GPS trail on First Chair servers. Location-related requests may be sent to map, weather, terrain, avalanche, webcam, Apple, Firebase, and other service providers as needed to provide the requested function.
- Purchase status: StoreKit is used for in-app purchases and restore purchases. Apple handles payment details; First Chair receives purchase entitlement status but does not receive payment card or bank details.
- Technical and request data: Service providers may process IP address, device or app metadata, crash or diagnostic data if enabled by the operating system/provider, request timestamps, and logs needed to deliver, secure, and troubleshoot the service.
- Support messages: If you email support, the information you send, your email address, and related correspondence are processed to respond to your request.
- Website and App Clip data: Firebase Hosting may process IP address, request metadata, and logs to deliver the website, App Clip pages, privacy policy, support page, and terms. The resort web experience may use browser local storage only for user-requested local preferences such as favorites.
How we use data
- To provide app functionality such as account sign-in, syncing, favorites, alerts, weather, maps, avalanche context, and purchase entitlements.
- To personalize the app experience, such as restoring settings and favorite resorts across devices.
- To operate, secure, debug, and improve the services used by the app.
- To comply with App Store, payment, legal, security, and abuse-prevention requirements.
Legal bases
- Contract and requested service: Processing needed to provide app features you request, including maps, forecasts, alerts, sync, purchases, and account access.
- Consent: Processing based on optional permissions such as location access, notifications, iCloud, and Sign in with Apple where applicable. You can withdraw consent by changing app or iOS settings.
- Legitimate interests: Processing needed to maintain security, prevent abuse, troubleshoot errors, and operate reliable services.
- Legal obligations: Processing required for payment, tax, platform, or regulatory compliance where applicable.
Tracking and advertising
First Chair Conditions does not display third-party ads and does not use collected app data to track you across apps or websites owned by other companies for advertising or advertising measurement.
The website does not use advertising cookies or cross-site tracking cookies. If this changes, this policy will be updated before those technologies are used.
Third-party services
The app uses Apple services, Firebase/Google services, and external map, weather, avalanche, webcam, terrain, and hosting providers. Depending on the feature used, providers may include Apple, Google/Firebase, Open-Meteo, Windy Webcams, EAWS/avalanche.report/lawinen.report, OpenStreetMap-related map data, Thunderforest, MapTiler/OpenFreeMap, Esri, basemap.at, and public terrain/elevation data sources. These providers may process coordinates, IP address, device/request metadata, or other data necessary to respond to requests, under their own terms and privacy practices.
Apple may act as an independent controller for App Store, StoreKit, payment, Apple ID, iCloud, Push Notification service, and operating-system services. Firebase/Google may act as a processor or independent controller depending on the service and data involved.
International transfers
Some providers may process data outside your country or outside the European Economic Area. Where required, transfers are based on appropriate safeguards such as data processing terms, standard contractual clauses, adequacy decisions, or the provider's transfer mechanisms.
Retention
- Account and sync data: Kept while your account or synced app data exists, and deleted when you use the account deletion flow or request deletion, unless retention is legally required.
- Push data: Kept while alerts are enabled or while a valid device token/subscription is needed, and removed when alerts are disabled, the token expires, or deletion is requested where technically possible.
- Local app data: Offline maps, favorites, settings, cached forecasts, and run-related data stored on your device remain until you delete them, uninstall the app, clear the relevant settings, or use app deletion tools.
- Provider logs: Third-party providers may keep technical logs according to their own retention schedules.
- Support emails: Kept as long as needed to handle the request and maintain a reasonable support history, then deleted when no longer required.
Data deletion and choices
- You can disable optional alerts, location permissions, background location, and notification permissions in the app or iOS Settings.
- You can use the account deletion flow in the app to delete Firebase account data associated with your signed-in account.
- You can remove iCloud-synced app data through Apple ID/iCloud settings or by contacting support for guidance.
- You can request access, correction, deletion, restriction, portability, or objection by emailing support. You may also withdraw consent where processing is based on consent.
- If you are in the EU/EEA, you may lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority.
Automated decisions
First Chair shows algorithmic estimates such as snow-quality scores, terrain layers, and route/context indicators. These are informational planning aids. They do not produce legal effects or similarly significant automated decisions about you.
Security
Reasonable technical and organizational measures are used to protect personal data, including platform security features from Apple, Firebase/Google, and iCloud where applicable. No internet-connected service can guarantee absolute security.
Children
First Chair Conditions is not directed to children and does not knowingly collect personal data from children. Mountain conditions and avalanche information are intended for users who can make responsible outdoor decisions or are supervised by someone who can.
Changes
This policy may be updated as the app, providers, or legal requirements change. The effective date above shows when this version took effect.
